Noah Was Perfect in His Genes

These are the generations of Noah.
Noah was a just man and blameless among his contemporaries. Noah walked with God.

Genesis 6:9

This verse is from the Bible, which I read and use regularly. But, there is a problem with it that may go unnoticed, which is going to become apparent. I do use tools other than just reading the Bible. Because I love going beyond just reading, I understand what this verse is really getting at, despite the simplicity in translation that may obscure some facts.

To help with your understanding, I am going to give a link to a plethora of translations of this verse. I want you to look there before moving on with reading. I want to give you, the reader, an opportunity to discover the issue for yourself. When you have examined the translations, continue reading.

Here is the link to the list of Genesis 6:9. Bible Hub is a great resource. It provides a generous number of commentaries on the Bible, including cross references and other resources.

While the Modern English Version I use is reliable. Mainly, I use an electronic version. I do have a print version, and the notes in the study portion drop hints of the doctrines the translators embrace. Basically, they go along with the Sons of Seth being the sons of God in Genesis 6:1–2. The beginning of Genesis 6 provides a fork in the road to two distinctly different understandings. The Sons of Seth doctrine is fraught with many problems; there is a better understanding, as you may see by continuing. It also tends to shed light on the pressures of translating the Bible.

The sons of Seth doctrine was introduced by Augustine of Hippo in his work The City of God. He saw these as righteous men who took wives of the daughters of men. The daughters of men in this case means the daughters of Cain. This was a huge divergence from the traditional Jewish interpretation that the sons of God were fallen angels. Augustine held that the traditional Jewish idea was incredible. He didn’t like it

So, which is the better understanding?

Genesis

This is the most important part of the conversation in this part of the text. It is the usage of the Hebrew word toledot translated as correctly as generations. It properly points to the descendants of Noah.

If you were paying attention back at the link above, it was discovered that some translations use the English word generation twice. The Modern English Version above uses generations first and contemporaries second. Which does sort of convey the idea. Contemporaries is translated from the Hebrew word dor. It is used in a specific form here, which only occurs once in the Tanakh.

Some translations use the word generation twice. This idea comes from how the King James Version renders both Hebrew words. Those translators probably used the way the Septuagint translators used one Greek word for both Hebrew words.

Now these are the generations of Noah: Noah, a righteous person who was perfect among his generation. Noah was pleasing to God.

Genesis 6:9 (Lexham English Septuagint)

The Septuagint is the Greek translation of the Tanakh. It was used at the time of Jesus. In that work, both Hebrew words of different meanings were translated into the Greek word genesis. The first occurrence is plural, the second singular.

The first Septuagint usage of the Greek word genesis is from the title of the first book of the Tanakh. That is why the first book is named Genesis in English. The first usage in the text of the Greek word genesis is in Genesis 2:4, where it is translated from the Hebrew toledot, which means origins in English.

To recap, the Greek word genesis is connected to origins or beginnings. By its usage in the verse above, it includes ancestry. Ancestry brings to mind genetics and DNA. These two ideas are inherently important in the second chapter of Genesis. Then there is the real hint that DNA is important and that the seed or offspring becomes the cornerstone of the redemption.

I will put enmity
between you and the woman,
and between your offspring and her offspring;
he will bruise your head,
and you will bruise his heel.”

Genesis 3:15

What becomes clear is that this is a gene war to claim the Human Race. One side employs corruption, the Other, redemption.

Though I don’t think the language of the time had specific words for genetics like we modern folks do. The ideas are apparent. Another necessary point to understand is that the English word gene comes from the German language by way of the original Greek word genea.

It is also important to know that the Greek word genesis also conveys the idea of nativity or nature.

Perfect Character or Perfect Nature?

That is the dilemma presented between the traditional (Septuagint and KJV) understandings of what is being said and the way modern scholars tend to translate.

The traditional understanding is clear. Noah’s genealogy is perfect. Modern Bibles say Noah’s life is perfect. Compare the MEV at the beginning with a more literal translation.

These are the generations of Noah. Noah was a righteous man, without defect in his generations. Noah walked with God.

Genesis 6:9 (Lexham English Bible)

Comparing that with the former MEV reveals some seeming loss of precision in the way it handles the text. It seems to blur the distinction between righteous and perfect to make this inference about Noah’s moral character.

With a modern blurred distinction, one comes away with the idea that moral imperfection was everywhere, and Noah was perfect. But that cannot be so, as God conveys that it is all flesh, not just humanity.

The earth was corrupt before God and filled with violence. God looked on the earth and saw it was corrupt, for all flesh had corrupted their way on the earth.

Genesis 6:11–12

This idea also adds complication, as it would include animals and creeping things. It also indicates that all flesh somehow willingly participated in this corruption.

The obvious conclusion is that there was a genetic imperfection that affected all kinds of flesh. Yet Noah’s perfection hints that not all individuals were affected. Is this idea explained in the text?

Bring every living thing of all flesh, two of every kind, into the ark to keep them alive with you. They shall be male and female. Two of every kind of bird, of every kind of animal, and of every kind of creeping thing of the earth will come to you to be kept alive.

Genesis 6:19–20

What is implied there is that God chose the animals to go on the ark, not Noah. This is another indicator of which animals were genetically fit to repopulate the Earth.

With this understanding, this judgment by flood was necessary because of genetic impurity. It is not about Noah being morally righteous or blameless. Most of us know that after the deluge subsided, he planted a vineyard and got drunk. Paul writes of the simple truth of the lot of humanity, we have all missed the mark and fallen short.

For all have sinned and come short of the glory of God,

Romans 3:23

One side in this war corrupts, the Other redeems.

Politics in Translation

As much as one would like to think that translations are objective. The people who do the work are susceptible to societal pressure. They are not immune to being influenced by the zeitgeist and politics from within the cultures where they live and work.

For example, the translators of the King James Version rendered the Greek word ekklesia as church. This deviated from William Tyndale’s earlier English translation, which was foundational to the KJV. Tyndale rendered ekklesia as congregation. This is the better reading and tends to follow the Septuagint, which used the word ekklesia to describe the mixed multitude in the Exodus. Consider a modern translation that brings clarity. The better English word is congregation or assembly.

This is he who was in the congregation in the wilderness with the angel who spoke to him on Mount Sinai, and with our fathers, who received living oracles to give to us,

Acts 7:38

Here is the KJV for contrast.

One might wonder how and why these things happen. The translators were aware of the king’s preference for the Anglican High Church. However, it was the independents (low church) who eschewed the hierarchy, preferring local control of congregations. This attitude of the king is still prevalent. There is a tendency among those who prefer high church liturgical ministrations to look down on independent congregations.

These independents and other separatists preferred to call themselves congregations and assemblies. This would create an apparent distinction between the Catholic and Anglican churches.

Remember, the KJV came about at a time when sovereign kings could still behead people who crossed them. The translators would not want to do something that would lead to beheading.

Subtle Corruption Enters

As with Augustine and the KJV, there is still a subtle inclination to dissipate the true teachings of God’s Word. Whether that dissipation is intentional or not, it is something of which a student of the Word needs to be aware. The constant barrage has been from the genesis, “Has God really said?” And it continues today.

The political pressures that stem from World War II still affect cultures today. That war pitted the Allied Powers against the Axis Powers. In an odd pairing, the Allied Powers were generally English-speaking nations with capitalist economies oddly partnering with the communists in Russia and China. These were allied to defeat the nationalists in Germany, Italy, and Japan.

The common thread amongst the leaders of the Axis Powers came from a belief that they were racially superior to other people. The Nazis in Germany claimed descent from a master race of ancients called Aryans. The foremost idea was to cleanse the Reich of genetically impure undesirables. The leaders in Italy wanted to revive the glories of the Roman Empire. In like manner, the popularity of eugenics was used to improve the quality of the Italian race. The Japanese considered themselves genetically superior to other Asian peoples and established themselves as protectors of asians against the encroachment of the Western Powers. Eugenics drove the effort to purify the Japanese race.

I must add a caveat here. I am certain there is only one race. It is Adam’s. We all share his blood and have a common Redeemer named Jesus. (Whether you actually believe it or not. Those truths remain.)

Back to World War II… The media in the nations of the Allied Powers often portrayed the driving narrative of the Axis Powers in stark racial language. Which is kind of weird because the demonic practices of eugenics were worldwide, even in the Allied Powers. This racial language stoked the hatred of the nationalist Axis Powers. It is also important to consider that the Marxist tenets of communism rejected ethnicity. Communist nations tended to avoid explicit declarations of inherent nationalist superiority. That makes for strange bedfellows.

Rejecting capitalism, communism prefers collectivism. It attempts to unite the masses of the poor of all races for the common good. Communist ideals attempt to better humanity through the proper application of social theory toward an equal outcome for all. It denies any natural inherited advantage, which tends toward celebrating mediocrity.

With time, the mass media in capitalist countries increasingly embraced the ideas of equal outcome. Those sympathetic to communism began to seek positions of influence. Eventually, the portrayal of World War II became a war against nationalism. Over time, this Marxist ideal against favoring one’s own nation or people of that nation over another subtly transformed from patriotism to nationalism and then to racism.

So the problem coming from the traditional interpretation of Genesis 6:9 becomes self-evident. With this subtle Marxism that entered the culture, it came to be preferred by the instructors in learning institutions. We can see the end result of this just by watching the news in the United States and other nations. Eventually, the Bible’s commending of Noah’s genetic purity to renew Adam’s race became quite unacceptable in academia. It is subtly embraced in many seminaries. Hence, the perfection moves from being applied to Noah’s ancestral genetic nature to his moral nature.

The Sons of God

The significance of Genesis 6:9 is subtly and increasingly obscured. With a proper understanding, Noah’s lineage becomes extremely important. The necessity of the flood is then overtly apparent. Something happened to corrupt all the kinds of flesh on Earth.

This is told immediately before Noah finds favor. And before it is revealed that God chose Noah.

When men began to multiply on the face of the earth and daughters were born to them, the sons of God saw that the daughters of men were fair and took as wives any they chose. The Lord said, “My Spirit will not always strive with man, for he is flesh; yet his days will be a hundred and twenty years.”
The Nephilim were on the earth in those days, and also after that, when the sons of God came in to the daughters of men, and they bore children to them. These were the mighty men who were of old, men of renown.
The Lord saw that the wickedness of man was great on the earth, and that every intent of the thoughts of his heart was continually only evil. The Lord was sorry that He had made man on the earth, and it grieved Him in His heart. So the Lord said, “I will destroy man, whom I have created, from the face of the earth—both man and beast, and the creeping things, and the birds of the sky, for I am sorry that I have made them.” But Noah found grace in the eyes of the Lord.

Genesis 6:1–8

This text exposes another subtly corrupted understanding of Genesis. One that I mentioned earlier. That is, that the good guys took the bad girls to wed.

The reality is that beings called the sons of God took human females as wives. This is stated in the above (Genesis 6:1–4) and parallels the apocryphal book of Enoch. I know what you might think of the apocrypha. Yet Enoch was included in the Tanakh.

And it happened that when the sons of men multiplied in those days, they begat good and beautiful daughters. And the angels, the sons of heaven, saw them and longed for them and said to one another, “Come let us choose for ourselves women from among the people and bring forth for ourselves children.”

These sons of God have transgressed in such a way that prompts God to bring certain judgment to them for their sin. Their sin involved flesh, as it is clear that flesh was condemned to perish in the flood.

The text says the sons of God found the women attractive, so they took whom they wanted as wives. There is some assumptions I make here. First, if they are marrying, it must have followed the traditions of marriage. Traditional marriage requires a bride price… A dowry. I also know from others’ testimonies that the spiritual world is legalistic. That is not a far-fetched notion, as God makes and keeps covenants.

With that, I think that the Bible shows these dowries in Genesis 4:17–24, where Cain’s progeny are lavishly endowed with technological knowledge.

Not After Their Kind

So, if the human sons of Seth took the human daughters of Cain, what is the grievous sin?

The answer is encoded in the phrase any they chose. That is, not who they chose but from where they came… Humanity.

Angels doing what was unseemly, taking daughters of men, they took strange flesh. That is, they took something that was not intended for the purposes for which the fallen wanted to use it. They made odd human-angel chimeras. These became the giants, the titans, the gods of old. Which were found in the pantheons of the Ancient Near East. Then migrating into the pantheons of Greece and Rome.

Let me explain… The purposes of reproduction are to multiply after their kind, just as established at creation. Humans reproduce humans. Angels don’t reproduce. Which probably leads to an objection some may have based on this:

Jesus answered, “You err, not knowing the Scriptures nor the power of God. For in the resurrection they neither marry nor are given in marriage, but are like the angels of God in heaven.

Matthew 22:29–30

The first thing to grasp about this passage is that Jesus is correcting the Sadducees who didn’t understand the Torah and its clear teachings on angels and resurrection. Second, Jesus did not say that angels cannot reproduce. He is saying they don’t marry, meaning there is no need for reproduction after their kind in heaven; their kind being elohim. Likewise, in the resurrection, there is no reproduction after their kind necessary. The Bible clearly states that the serpent (Shining One) of Genesis 3 has seed. It follows that other elohim (angels) do, too.

(Elohim is used as a spiritual class of being when used with lower-case e. Capitalized Elohim is the Most High God. God is Elohim, but not all elohim are God.)

When angels take humans as wives and bear children, chimeras are created. Just this act alone violates many of the guardrails God established. The resulting progeny were not from reproduction after their kind.

There are lots of technicalities wrought in this idea. But the underlying issue is that of comingled DNA. I will save you the details, but it is inherent that the same happened to the animal kinds, as they were also destroyed in the flood.

The Bible says there is nothing new under the sun. Genetic manipulation has always been around. Human technology has advanced much. We can manipulate genetics with novel tools.

Do you wonder what God thinks about technologies like CRISPR that can edit the genome?

Humanity has the technology to create chimeras. This isn’t just hybridization or selective breeding for desired traits that already exist in an organism’s genome. It is a very different practice of combining genetics from one organism to another.

Consider something so familiar as corn. Your home probably contains products made from genetically modified corn. This would probably be an organism that is called BT-Corn. It gets its name from the naturally occurring bacteria Bacillus thuringiensis. (Science cannot create bacteria.) The bacteria produce a toxin used as a pesticide. In making BT-corn, scientists take a gene that produces the toxin from the bacterium. It is then inserted into the genome of corn. The corn then produces the toxin that kills predator pests by destroying the digestive tract of the caterpillar larvae.

In effect, that corn is a chimera. There is going to be some disagreement in my distinction between chimera and hybrid. But I want to make clear that inserting traits by genetic manipulation is not traditional hybridization.

But these things don’t reproduce after their kind. Bacteria do not reproduce with corn. I know about ligers, mules, and other hybrids like them. Ligers would be a kind of feline, and mules a kind of equine. Felines don’t reproduce with canines or equines.

All that to say, when angels sire with humans, the result is something that wasn’t properly meant to be. It was seeking after strange flesh.

Stranger Danger

Does my choice of words sound familiar?

It should.

Likewise, the angels who did not keep to their first domain, but forsook their own dwelling, He has kept in everlasting chains under darkness for the judgment of the great day. Just as Sodom and Gomorrah, and the surrounding cities in like manner, gave themselves to immorality and went after different flesh, they serve as an example by suffering the punishment of eternal fire.

Jude 6-7

Jude’s epistle helps to bring understanding to what really conspired before the flood. I think the epistle also supports my opinion that the daughters of men were really the daughters of Cain. (Augustine got something right.) The angels who fell entered into a covenant by marriage with human families in the progeny of Cain. As stated previously, there was a technological explosion among the children of Cain. It seems likely that the fathers of those taken received technological knowledge as dowry. Jude tells us that the way of Cain has to do with selfish greed.

Woe to them! For they have gone in the way of Cain, have run greedily after the error of Balaam for a reward, and perished in the rebellion of Korah.

Jude 11

Noah Was Perfect

We know Noah, like Adam, sinned. We all do. He did not lead a perfect life and needed the same Redeemer we all do. But what is given is that Noah’s ancestry was genetically pure enough to be the progenitor of the renewal of the human race. All eight of those selected to be on the ark would have had untainted genetics.

The unspoken necessity is that angels intermarrying with the daughters of men imposed themselves into the genetics of humanity. Without the intervention of the deluge, all of humanity would have been changed, and redemption would have been impossible.

This gets really technical. The angel-human chimera comes from the seed of angels. Angels have no kinsman. Without a kin relationship, which is in the blood, there is no redemption. This whole idea comes from the Hebrew word goel, which is translated as kinsman, redeemer, and blood avenger in the Tanakh. The last Adam, Jesus Christ, is the Kinsman, the Redeemer, and the Blood Avenger of the entire lot of Adam’s seed.

This was the enemy’s first great incursion to stop redemption. When one considers Jude 1:6, it is clear that what happened is disorderly. I’m no Greek scholar, but when Jude writes, “the angels who did not keep to their first domain, but forsook their own dwelling.” He is saying that those angels left their sovereign domains and forsook their own dwellings (idiomatically analogous to the container we call our body).

Think like this, at creation, humanity was given a domain to master and become sovereign over. (I know the word might upset sensibilities, but the idea is important and contextual.) In Genesis 1:26, humans were given the imperative by God at creation to take dominion over the earth. This is His order He established. The underlying idea connects to the words in Jude, again by way of the Septuagint. The Hebrew word for rule is rada. It is an imperative meaning to dominate or lord over. The Septuagint translates the Hebrew rada to the Greek archo. That verb means to rule or to begin. In other words, to be first. In Jude, the Greek word arche is translated as domain. Which is a word that means power, ruler, and the sphere of authority. So the usage of sovereign fits. The angels did not keep their own sovereignty.

The next idea from Jude 1:6 is the phrase proper dwelling place. This is from a somewhat unique Greek word oiketerion. This word is used only once in another place in the New Testament.

In this one we groan, earnestly desiring to be sheltered with our house which is from heaven.

2 Corinthians 5:2

Here, oiketerion is translated as house. Paul uses it as an idiom of our physical body, which houses us.

These angels violated their proper place by insinuating themselves into another. I don’t know how to convey the stark importance of the legalities violated. The goal originated from angels to corrupt the seed of man. The sentence was immediate and everlasting confinement. Their progeny were sentenced to be destroyed in the flood. From that, it is easy to infer that there was no place on Earth for these chimeras.

Having no Redeemer, it follows that the spirits of these dead chimeras now have no dwelling place. There is much debate, and some say they roam and antagonize humanity as demons. They endlessly pursue a vicarious experience through others. They yearn for the things that they partook in with their own bodies. Essentially, they are forever searching for satiation of their lusts. The Bible does say demons have no dwelling places of their own and roam around deserted places.

I cannot help to point out how Peter seemed to consider this idea. Because these chimeras died in the flood, they went into the water and never came out. It’s a quaint euphemism for death.

Believer’s Baptism

Now, picture how baptism is done. People are plunged into the water and then forcefully pulled out… Alive. It’s the antithesis of what happened to the angel-human chimeras at the flood. In essence, these ones pulled from the water are appointed to resurrection, unlike the spirits of the chimeras who perished under the water. Every single time someone is baptized, the fallen ones are reminded of their fated eternity.

Peter speaks of Jesus going into Sheol. It was to show the triumph over death He had. It was to show His triumph over all authorities and powers who are now subject to Him. Peter also likens baptism as idiomatic of the reality. It is a picture of the resurrection, proclaiming those appointed to that end.

For Christ also has once suffered for sins, the just for the unjust, so that He might bring us to God, being put to death in the flesh, but made alive by the Spirit, by whom He also went and preached to the spirits in prison, who in times past were disobedient, when God waited patiently in the days of Noah while the ark was being prepared, in which a few, that is, eight souls, were saved through water. Figuratively this is like baptism, which also saves us now. It is not washing off the dirt from the body, but a response to God from a good conscience through the resurrection of Jesus Christ, who has gone into heaven and is at the right hand of God, with angels and authorities and powers being made subject to Him.

1 Peter 3:18–22

In his second epistles, Peter uses baptism as the antithesis to those perishing beneath the waters.

For if God did not spare the angels that sinned, but cast them down to hell and delivered them into chains of darkness to be kept for judgment; and if He did not spare the ancient world, but saved Noah, a preacher of righteousness, with seven others, when He brought a flood upon the world of the ungodly; and if He condemned the cities of Sodom and Gomorrah to destruction by reducing them to ashes, making them an example to those afterward who would live ungodly lives; and if He delivered righteous Lot, who was distressed by the filthy conduct of the wicked (for that righteous man lived among them, and what he saw and heard of their lawless deeds tormented his righteous soul day after day); then the Lord knows how to rescue the godly from trial, and to keep the unrighteous under punishment for the Day of Judgment, especially those who walk after the flesh in pursuit of unclean desires, and despise authority.

Which are you?

Cherubs and Old Gods

As I looked, a whirlwind came out of the north, a great cloud with fire flashing forth continually, and a brightness was all around it, and in its midst something as glowing metal in the midst of the fire. Also out of the midst came the likeness of four living creatures. And this was their appearance: They had the likeness of a man. Every one had four faces, and every one had four wings. Their legs were straight and the soles of their feet were like the sole of a calf’s hoof. And they gleamed like the color of burnished bronze. They had the hands of a man under their wings on their four sides. As for the faces and wings of the four of them, their wings were joined to one another. Their faces did not turn when they went. Each went straight forward.
As for the likeness of their faces, each had the face of a man, and all four had the face of a lion on the right side, and the face of an ox on the left side, and the face of an eagle. Thus were their faces. And their wings were stretched upward. Two wings of every one were joined to one another, and two covered their bodies.

Ezekiel 1:4–11

The most fascinating thing about the Bible are the things that are hidden in plain sight. Consider the above passage, as Ezekiel is given a vision of God’s throne. There’s much to be discovered here, but the important thing will be to compare the passage above to this:

As for the wheels, they were called in my hearing the whirling wheels. Each one had four faces. The first face was the face of a cherub, the second face was the face of a man, the third the face of a lion, and the fourth the face of an eagle.

Ezekiel 10:13–14

Now… The descriptions of the creatures seem almost the same, and some might just read past both and not think to compare. There is one significant difference, that may just be a coincidence, right?

Do oxen and cherubs have similar looks?

I’m certain most think of cherubs as like little babies dressed in diapers much like depictions of Cupid. Maybe Ezekiel was confused by what he saw. I don’t think so. Here’s why.

Reading a bit further in Ezekiel, we see this lament against the King of Tyre.

Moreover the word of the Lord came to me, saying: Son of man, take up a lamentation over the king of Tyre and say to him, Thus says the Lord God:
You had the seal of perfection,
full of wisdom and perfect in beauty.
You were in Eden,
the garden of God;

Ezekiel 28:11–13a

Wait. What?

When was the King of Tyre in the Garden of God?

What we have encountered is a literary device where a character serves as a substitute for another. In this case, the passage is not about the King of Tyre, but someone like him who was in the garden of Eden.

The King of Tyre was not a good guy… Neither is that one denizen in the garden of God.

Most of us probably think we can readily identify this seedy character. Ezekiel did not. That discussion would be fun to have, but the important part is how this character is identified. That is, as in a class of being.

You were in Eden,
the garden of God;
every precious stone was your covering:
the sardius, topaz, and the diamond,
the beryl, the onyx, and the jasper,
the sapphire, the emerald, and the carbuncle, and gold.
The workmanship of your settings and sockets was in you;
on the day that you were created, they were prepared.
You were the anointed cherub that covers,
and I set you there;
you were upon the holy mountain of God;
you walked up and down in the midst of the stones of fire.

Ezekiel 28:13–14

You were the anointed cherub. What do you think cherubs look like?

I think Ezekiel knew and encoded it in his writings. Again, Ezekiel did not identify the character in the garden of God. What we do know is that more than one of these angelic beings rebelled against God. In fact, one-third of their number will be part of the sedition against God.

The ox is bovine in nature. The ox was domesticated. But like all domesticated cattle they have a common ancestor that roamed much of Eurasia. It is called the aurochs. These creatures have been hunted to extinction in the 17th century. The aurochs were menacing and stood darn close to six feet high at the shoulders. This was a powerful animal.

With that background, add in that oxen can also be identified as having horns. Oxen were known to gore people, we get this from the remedies given in the Torah, like in Exodus 21:28-29. Horns are not necessarily indicators of a male bull.

Now, considering the ancient near east, there is much evidence of bovine worship. Greek mythology describes the founding of Europe. Zeus came in the form of an aurochs bull, he then seduces and kidnaps the beautiful princess Europa. Cows are still considered sacred in India.

All of these ancient mythologies overlap and are a unique thing to study in themselves. Frankly, I didn’t pay attention to the mythologies taught in high school, though I wish I did now. But the polemics in the Bible exposes the real identities of these entities. I am of the opinion that bull worship is almost as old as humanity itself. It is still prevalent today, if one knows how to discern it.

This bull worship certainly tripped up Israel from the earliest days.

He received them from their hand, and fashioned it with an engraving tool, and made it into a molded calf. Then they said, “This is your god, O Israel, who brought you up from the land of Egypt.”

Exodus 32:4

It is a recurring theme.

At that point, the king got some advice and made two golden calves and said to the people, “It is too difficult for you to go up to Jerusalem. Here are your gods, O Israel, which brought you up out of the land of Egypt.” He set one in Bethel, and he put the other in Dan. This was a sin, for the people went to worship before the one, even all the way in Dan.  

1 Kings 12:28–30

The gods of Canaan became a real trap for Israel just as God had warned in Exodus. It was probably less than a month after hearing the warning that Israel would ensnare themselves. Those made gods of Israel tend to be representative by oxen. The idea goes much deeper.

The ox or bull is associated with the chief god of the Canaanites. To the Canaanites, he is Hadad, also know as Baal. The Babylonians called him Marduk. He is Zeus, or Jupiter in the Roman pantheon. He was the son of Kronos, Saturn in the Roman Pantheon. Kronos was the former king of the universe and king of Titans. He is the old god overruled by his son.

I hope you see how the mythology echoes what happened in the garden of God. In the realm of the fallen, the God you and I know as Jehovah is the old God, the bad guy.

But the fallen stories also name their version of the creator-god Bull El. He was their creator deity. He is known as the father of the gods, think Titans. The word titan comes from the name of an Amorite tribe called the Tidanu. Tidanu comes from the Akkadian word ditânu which means bison or bull.

It gets far worse. This Kronos, he consumed his children for fear they would usurp him. Kinda sounds like the argument many give as a reason why abortions should be available freely. Nevertheless, as their story goes… It’s a twisted version of the rebellion.

Kronos, Saturn, El has a sinister association with the Israelis. They would embrace him with the name Moloch. He was the god to whom Israelis sacrificed their children in frying pans.

It is not too difficult to understand how the Israelis were hornswoggled. The name El is used for this Canaanite deity and the Bible uses it for the Most High God. I think of it as the English word God, which when capitalized means the Most High and when not means lesser persons. El is also shorthand for Elohim, which can use the same rules.

What does all this mean?

Personally, I think there is a cherub that looks similar to oxen which is actively stealing worship from Jehovah God. It is by confusion, or perhaps a better word, delusion.

Bull imagery is not the exclusive expression of this god. The hexagon and the six-pointed star also serve as imagery of this god. Yeah, those are some old-timey conspiracy theories, right?

But hey, seriously… Red Bull gives you wings.

The Truth About Idols

Without question, great is the mystery of godliness:
God was revealed in the flesh,
justified in the Spirit,
seen by angels,
preached to the Gentiles,
believed on in the world,
taken up into glory.

1 Timothy 3:16

Paul’s charge to his son in the faith Timothy is to reassure him that he knew how to conduct himself in the house of God. Amidst the instructions for overseers in the local church is this sentence which most think was a hymn or creed of those early Christians. It speaks of the mystery that we now know.

God is revealed in the flesh. The speaks of the incarnation of Jesus. Not that God changed places, but that He is revealed in flesh. This speaks to the Son’s existence before His virgin birth. As Paul wrote in Philippians 2, He being in the form of God. He is the brightness of His glory and the express image of God (Hebrews 1:3.) The Son is Spirit being revealed in the flesh. Jesus taught us that God is Spirit (John 4:24.)

That’s part of the mystery. It continues. Jesus was not justified in the flesh, but justified in the Spirit. That is attested to in His resurrection. When He came back from the dead in a new body, it proved there was no other entity that could lay hold on Him.

He is preached to the Gentiles, basically the truth is being spread to all nations. He is believed on in the world. Many people are saved because He is preached. We know He is taken up into glory. He sits at the right hand of the Father, as God.

Seen by Angels

It is this idea that Jesus was seen by angels, that draws me in. Jesus being seen by the angels means they could identify Him as God readily. But does it entail that He is known by them before being manifest in the flesh?

There seems to be testimony to that fact. It occurs in one of the earliest accounts of Jesus’ ministry in Israel.

Jesus withdrew with His disciples to the sea. And a great crowd followed Him from Galilee and Judea and Jerusalem, and Idumea, and from beyond the Jordan. And those from Tyre and Sidon, a great crowd, when they heard what great things He did, came to Him. He told the disciples to have a small boat ready for Him because of the crowd, lest they should crush Him. For He had healed many, so that all who had diseases pressed on Him to touch Him. When unclean spirits saw Him, they fell down before Him, crying out, “You are the Son of God.” But He sternly ordered them not to make Him known.

Mark 3:7–12

If we take Mark’s Gospel chronologically here, this incident occurred before Jesus selected any of His inner-circle of twelve disciples.

What is clear is that the people around Jesus are the time did not really know they were in the presence of God. Let alone that He is made flesh. Yet those unclean spirits know and testify to the fact right. They could apprehend the spiritual reality readily. But a question comes to mind. Where did they come from?

So many details are not included. I think it safe to assume that Jesus was casting unclean spirits out of people. Those spirits identified Him immediately. And He commanded them to not reveal Who He is. Did the crowd present hear and what did they understand?

I don’t know. I know there were spiritual beings present by witness of the text. Are there any indications that some of those were angels?

The text lends itself to that idea. The Bible reveals that there are two kinds of unclean spirits, fallen angels and demons. Demons are the disembodied spirits from the progeny of some fallen angels, the Nephilim.

The Disembodied Spirits Called Demons

When men began to multiply on the face of the earth and daughters were born to them, the sons of God saw that the daughters of men were fair and took as wives any they chose.

Genesis 6:1–2

Way back toward the beginning of it all, Moses reveals that angels took wives. The language used is not pleasant, and it isn’t without controversy. The term Sons of God is used sparingly in the Tanakh. As it is used in other places, it always means angels. That is direct creations of God and this by that same title given to Adam in Luke 3:38. (There are other resources that delve into this concept, the tag cloud can help in that pursuit.)

The progeny of the fallen angels and their taken human women were called Nephilim. They were the mighty men of old.

The Nephilim were on the earth in those days, and also after that, when the sons of God came in to the daughters of men, and they bore children to them. These were the mighty men who were of old, men of renown.

Genesis 6:4

It is my opinion that the corrupted human bloodlines from these strange flesh unions were the vast majority of people that died in the flood. That idea comes from the Septuagint translation where it says that Noah was perfect in his generations. The Greek word translated is where the English word generations comes. It reveals a relationship to Noah’s genetics.

In fact, the entire incident of the ark hints that there were corrupted genetics in the human and animal kinds. God chose all the occupants of the ark. If Noah was perfect in his generations, it follows that the animals selected were perfect in theirs.

Now, it becomes a bit clearer that there are many unclean spirits, and kinds such as fallen angel and the disembodied spirits of angel/human hybrids known as demons. It follows that the unclean spirits (both angelic and demon) would see God as He is and readily identify Him in the flesh.

Before the Time

There is another encounter Jesus had with unclean spirits that is important to understand. It reveals yet another concept.

When He came to the other side into the country of the Gergesenes, there met Him two men possessed with demons, coming out of the tombs, extremely fierce, so that no one might pass by that way. Suddenly they cried out, saying, “What have we to do with You, Jesus, Son of God? Have You come here to torment us before the time?”

Matthew 8:28–29

These unclean spirits are specifically identified as demons. They identify Jesus’ divinity readily. Yet it is those two questions. Apparently they knew of certain timings. And they knew of torment, and their consignment to it. One might ask, is there punishment spoken of in the Bible?

It takes a bit of sleuthing to get it out of the Tanakh. So the first stop is the last book of the Torah, Deuteronomy. This particular Chester is full of details on the spiritual reality of Things.

They made Him jealous with strange gods;
with abominations they provoked Him to anger.
They sacrificed to demons, not to God,
to gods whom they knew not,
to new gods that recently came along,
whom your fathers did not fear.

Deuteronomy 32:16–17

Israel went to worship stage gods. These were actually demons. The Hebrew word is shedim, it appears only twice in the Bible.

The Israelis sacrificed to the demons. The text says these were new gods that recently came along. It seems to indicate that these came after creation. This is especially clear as it follows Genesis 6 above.

It bears mentioning that the mythological Golden Age hearkens back to the time when gods lived with humans. This would be before the flood. There is a stark difference between the mythological understanding and what God thinks of the days of Noah. There is a contemporary popular mantra announcing a new Golden Age. The Bible does tell us that the end days will be like the days of Noah. The gods will once again live with men.

There is a definitive judgment coming. And this is what the demons were alluding to about Jesus coming to them before the time. Jeremiah prophesied the demise of those gods.

Thus you shall say to them: The gods that have not made the heavens and the earth, even they shall perish from the earth and from under these heavens.

Jeremiah 10:11

Remember, in the encounter above that those demons also alluded to torment. That is a reference to eternal fire. Jesus told us the how and what for in that.

“Then He will say to those at the left hand, ‘Depart from Me, you cursed, into the eternal fire, prepared for the devil and his angels.

Matthew 25:41

Eternal fire is made for the devil and his angels. By the testimony of the demons in the vicinity of the Gerasenes, they knew of their fate in torment. It follows that eternal fire is for the devil, fallen angels, and demons.

To come full circle, we are still before the time. The time comes in the judgment of the great day. The one reserved for all of the enemies of God, the Great White Throne of Revelation 20.

Idol Talk

This may shock the sensibilities of some. The idols of the Old Testament are real beings. They are not simple creations of carved wood and hammered metals. They are not figments of active imagination. They were and are real entities that take worship to themselves. They have a clear destination.

The loftiness of man shall be humbled,
and the haughtiness of men shall be brought low;
the Lord alone will be exalted in that day;
the idols He shall utterly abolish.

Isaiah 2:17–18

I know that many think idols are the creation of vivid imaginations. They are not. This truth gets further confused because of the allegorization of the idea of an idol. One that reinforces the notion that they are figments of the imagination which take us away from God.

I think that this allegorization has led to many folks putting their guard down. In other words, the west has been trained not to see these things. That makes it harder to understand the stark reality of the enemies against us as a race.

For our fight is not against flesh and blood, but against principalities, against powers, against the rulers of the darkness of this world, and against spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly places.

Ephesians 6:12

The truths revealed in the Bible don’t always lend themselves to a personal application. Sometimes, that might obscure the reality. It then seems a bit silly to say that something like football or food becomes an idol for people. It may seem to lend itself that way, but the idols of the Old Testament are clearly real entities. Ones who do not want humans to flourish.

Changing Allegiance

The purpose for this lengthy article is to expose the reality. The hope is for the body of Christ to shake off the silly thinking that idols are imaginary things that keep us from God. The truth is these are real entities who have real power, that is if one extends it to them. When Jesus went to the cross, He removed the bondage. People can be free of these besetting and disabling influences in Jesus’ name.

In the Tanakh, there is no sinners’ prayer. Though the invitation is there as a call to change one’s mind… To repent. The reality is that to leave idols is to change allegiance. To come to God is to change allegiance.

Which leads to an important biblical principle. One that many do not quite grasp. The spirit world tends toward the legalistic. They cannot go where they do not have rights. From the beginning, this principle is laid out. Adam yielded rights to the dominion he was given by God.

This point is personally extended and explained in the New Testament. One yields their members, thus giving rights and permissions to the unclean spirits. Jesus spoke of this in John 8. Paul shows all exactly what it is.

Do not yield your members to sin as instruments of unrighteousness, but yield yourselves to God, as those who are alive from the dead, and your bodies to God as instruments of righteousness.

Romans 6:13

God does not work in anyone until one lets Him do it. Ephesians 1:13 clearly demonstrates this principle. It is a truth that clobbers some fatalistic lies taught by some circles of Christianity. The Bible is clear, one serves who one yields to serve. That is why the Bible uses the term servants and slaves, as these have masters.

I speak in human terms because of the weakness of your flesh, for just as you have yielded your members as slaves to impurity and iniquity leading to more iniquity, even so now yield your members as slaves to righteousness unto holiness. For when you were the slaves of sin, you were free from righteousness. What fruit did you have then from the things of which you are now ashamed? The result of those things is death. But now, having been freed from sin and having become slaves of God, you have fruit unto holiness, and the end is eternal life.

Romans 6:19–22

The problem is that all have sinned. Universally, it is before anyone can know the requirements of the moral law. When that’s explained, the reality is all have missed the mark of perfection necessitated.

The ugly underbelly of that is a person who sins yields themselves to a master. Sin brings more sin, which brings death. Death brings judgment.

Jesus frees all from having to be bound to sin. When anyone repents and believes, God deposits His Spirit in that person freeing them from condemnation. The Spirit becomes a permanent presence and mark in them forever.

Indwelling Unclean Spirits

Another interweaving theme in the Bible suggests that the enemy counterfeits the things of God. It follows that those unclean spirits could also enter a person. There are many such cases detailed in the Scriptures. Consider what Jesus says about that from a different perspective.

“When an unclean spirit goes out of a man, it passes through dry places seeking rest, but finds none. Then it says, ‘I will return to my house from which I came.’ And when it comes, it finds it empty, swept, and put in order. Then it goes and brings with itself seven other spirits more evil than itself, and they enter and dwell there. And the last state of that man is worse than the first. So shall it be also with this evil generation.”

Matthew 12:43–45

Even though the principle Jesus is teaching is not necessarily about demon possession. He is using that truth to explain the activities of those who questioned and mocked His divine authority. It is a stern warning against the real dangers of stubborn disbelief. The important consideration being taught is that rejecting Jesus lends one to be more open and vulnerable to the principalities and powers of the air.

Think back to Jesus’ ministry, and the early days of the apostles. Possession of a person by indwelling unclean spirits was real. Jesus, the apostles, and even some others did cast demons out of folks. But did that problem just go away?

From present reality, no. It certainly seems foreign to many in western Christianized nations. It is as if the enemy has subtly hidden himself and his tactics. The activity of unclean spirits recessed in a way to not really be detectable. In modern times, demon possession is really just fodder for ghost stories and scary movies.

It did not just disappear. I see the evidence more frequently than I want to encounter it. And I’ve had personal encounters. I think there is a marked increase as the time quickly approaches. It is a last hurrah.

There are some immediately discernible behavioral indicators of influence and even possession by unclean spirits. These behavioral indicators have increased exponentially in contemporary populations because of the late hour. So… How does this happen?

It certainly does not without a person presenting themselves for the very purpose. Sometimes those rights and permissions are coerced by trauma, whether the trauma is purposed for that or not. Sometimes they are granted when one willfully ingests hallucinogenics into their body. It doesn’t matter if using those substances is legal or not. Others present themselves purposefully, knowing exactly what it is they are doing.

The language I use is indeed nuanced for various reasons. Mainly, I am not yet led to write in further detail on the subject. The point is that there are real unclean spirits and they attempt to influence the world in the same ways they did at the time of Jesus.

Humans are in a real spiritual war!

The Turning Point

There’s a reason why much of this has slipped under the proverbial radar. It is to avoid detection. But why?

Well, that leads to one of my favorite things about what Jesus did at the cross.

He blotted out the handwriting of ordinances that was against us and contrary to us, and He took it out of the way, nailing it to the cross. And having disarmed authorities and powers, He made a show of them openly, triumphing over them by the cross.

Colossians 2:14–15

It was the law that empowered sin because it exposed sin in everyone. At the cross, Jesus took the handwriting, really He took the certificate of indebtedness to sin and destroyed it. In effect, freeing the entire race of humanity from the bondage of sin. The enemies had to go underground. In light of the truth that nobody is bound to yield themselves to their influences.

It is the other part that is more important. He disarmed the authorities and powers. These unclean spirits really have no power, other than what anyone may be extended to them. Because Jesus removed the indebtedness, they have only whatever is willfully volunteered. The truth is that anything given can also be revoked by will. It is done in the name of Jesus Christ. It is by Him that folks are set free.

Concluding Thoughts

This is not meant to elicit fear. On the contrary, because Jesus died there is nothing to fear. As the introductory citation shows, His resurrection is proof of that.

For those who are reading, it may be that God is revealing some things to you. You may have extended rights and privileges you no longer want to do. That is easy to fix. You can revoke them at any time in the name of Jesus.

For those who have never really believed or changed allegiances, you can do that, too. Set your mind to serving God. Believe that Jesus did die. In so doing, demolished the certificate of indebtedness that shackled you. The proof is, He rose again. Believing that is what pleases God.

And without faith it is impossible to please God, for he who comes to God must believe that He exists and that He is a rewarder of those who diligently seek Him.

Which Side Are You On?

History provides some poignant lessons… Among those is this one. I know I’ve written about this recently, but here is an important contemporary idea that needs to be considered in light of what the Bible says.

Why do the nations rage,
and the peoples plot in vain?
The kings of the earth set themselves,
and the rulers take counsel together,
against the Lord
and against His anointed, saying,
“Let us tear off their bonds
and cast away their ropes from us.”

Psalm 2:1–3

How could this apply today, it’s just poetic literature, right?

Reading it carefully, it is God speaking to the nations and the people of those countries about their policies. God calls their plans self-serving.

The kings of the Earth set themselves. This clearly states that the leaders of the nations set themselves in opposition to God and Jesus. There are also rulers who counsel with these kings. Some of your translations read princes, but I think something a bit more sinister is at play. The Hebrew word translated here as ruler is razan. It means heavy, as in commanding. It is translated as prince or ruler. When we look at the Septuagint, the Hebrew scholars chose the Greek word archon. This adds a spiritual context that may hint at some underlying context.

Archon is used in many forms and places in the New Testament. It is used in the gospels as a descriptor of Beelzebub, ruler of demons (Matthew 12:24; Mark 3:22; Luke 11:15.) It is also used in the Gospel of John to describe the ruler of this world. For the discussion at hand, let’s look at the two ways Paul uses it.

And you were dead in your trespasses and sins, in which you formerly walked according to the age of this world and according to the prince of the power of the air, the spirit who now works in the sons of disobedience,

Ephesians 2:1–2

And again here:

For our fight is not against flesh and blood, but against principalities, against powers, against the rulers of the darkness of this world, and against spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly places.

Ephesians 6:12

In the first citation, Paul says there is a prince of the power of the air. To understand, think that there is an archon of the exousia of the air. The second instance tells us we wrestle not against principalities, those are the archons. We also wrestle against exousias (powers) and kosmokrators (rulers.) These are dark powers at work in this world.

Considering that, what may be said in Psalm 2 of the kings and rules taking counsel together is that there are dark powers working with human leaders to effect policies in our world. The question then comes, is there evidence for such a thing?

I think there is ample evidence. Step back into recent history:

There is a source called Secret Nazi Plans for Eastern Europe A Study of Lebensraum Policies by Dr. Ihor Kamenetsky. He writes of the German occupation of Poland and the desire to eliminate what the Germans deemed as sub-human. The occupiers desired to weaken Polish society to accept their ideas. Those socialist Germans issued the following decree:

“All measures which have the tendency to limit births are to be tolerated or to be supported. Abortion in the remaining area (of Poland) must be declared free from punishment. The means for abortion and contraceptive means may be offered publicly without any police restriction. Homosexuality is always to be declared legal. The institutions and persons involved professionally in abortion practices are not to be interfered with by police. Racial-hygenic measures are not to be promoted.” — (Page 139, Secret Nazi Plans for eastern Europe)

It is said… Those that do not know history are doomed to repeat it. Looking again at Psalm 2 seems to reveal a prophetic pattern that comes with substantial consequences and an ultimate consummation.

The first point in the socialist’s decree is unrestrictive abortion and contraception. Given modern propensities, these may be perceived as desirable things to have. After all, with global warming, limiting the human population is probably a good practice. But is it?

Except the Lord build the house,
those who build labor in vain;
except the Lord guards the city,
the watchman stays awake in vain.
It is in vain for you to rise up early,
to stay up late,
and to eat the bread of hard toil,
for He gives sleep to His beloved.
Look, children are a gift of the Lord,
and the fruit of the womb is a reward.
As arrows in the hand of a mighty warrior,
so are the children of one’s youth.
Happy is the man
who has his quiver full of them;
he shall not be ashamed
when he speaks with the enemies at the gate.

Psalm 127:1–5

God commands humans to be fruitful and multiply. He calls children a gift of His, they are a reward. They are even deemed weapons of a mighty warrior. Could that be why the Germans wanted to curtail these things under the lie of freedom?

There is also the unspoken idea present in the decree… Marriage to one person for life is too restrictive.

Look… The enemy doesn’t change tactics at all. He gets people to buy into the idea that the institutions given by God are too restrictive. God gave gender, male and female. That is now declared too binary. God told humans to be fruitful and multiply, but having children binds one to home. God gave marriage as a gift, but the idea of one man and one woman is old-fashioned. The means to be fruitful, that is sex for procreation is also considered too narrow. These things are now declared as too binding, just like ropes used to tie something up. They are considered limitations to human freedom. It is the same proclamation of bondage and a false promise of liberty that the nachash (serpent) spoke to Eve in the garden, “You shall be as gods.”.

The National Socialists in Germany knew how to demoralize humans. We are witnessing the repeat by decree of governments worldwide. It is just as if what Psalm 2 says… Is true now. Yet, history demonstrates that atrocities follow such things.

The War Against Humans

The enemy is at war with humans. There is an all-out battle waging in both the spiritual world and the physical world centered on human procreation. It was declared in Genesis 3:15, and it has God as Victor on one side and dark powers on another. It is like the activities of world governments are telling us Who the real Victor is.

I saw when the Lamb opened one of the seals. Then I heard one of the four living creatures saying, with voice like thunder, “Come and see.” And I looked, and there before me was a white horse. He who sat on it had a bow. And a crown was given to him, and he went forth conquering that he might overcome.
When He opened the second seal, I heard the second living creature say, “Come and see.” Then another horse that was red went forth. Power was given to him who sat on it to take peace from the earth, causing people to kill one another. Then a great sword was given to him.
When He opened the third seal, I heard the third living creature say, “Come!” I looked, and there was a black horse, and he who sat on it had a pair of scales in his hand. Then I heard a voice in the midst of the four living creatures saying, “A quart of wheat for a day’s wages, and three quarts of barley for a day’s wages, and do not harm the oil and the wine.”
When He opened the fourth seal, I heard the voice of the fourth living creature say, “Come!” So I looked, and there was a pale horse, and the name of him who sat on it was Death, and Hades followed him. Power over a fourth of the earth was given to them, to kill with sword, with hunger, with death, and by the beasts of the earth.
When He opened the fifth seal, I saw under the altar the souls of those who had been slain for the word of God and for the testimony they had held. They cried out with a loud voice, “How long, O Sovereign Lord, holy and true, until You judge and avenge our blood on those who dwell on the earth?” Then a white robe was given to each of them, and they were told to rest a little longer, until the number of their fellow servants and brothers should be completed, who would be killed as they were.
I watched as He opened the sixth seal. And suddenly there was a great earthquake. The sun became black, like sackcloth made from goat hair, and the moon became like blood. And the stars of heaven fell to the earth, as a fig tree drops its unripe figs when it is shaken by a strong wind. Then the heavens receded like a scroll when it is rolled up, and every mountain and island was removed from its place.
Then the kings of the earth and the great men and the rich men and the commanding officers and the strong and everyone, slave and free, hid themselves in the caves and in the rocks of the mountains. They said to the mountains and rocks, “Fall on us, and hide us from the face of Him who sits on the throne, and from the wrath of the Lamb, for the great day of His wrath has come. Who is able to withstand it?”

Revelation 6:1–17

It is just as He said in Psalm 2…

He who sits in the heavens laughs; the LORD ridicules them.
Then He will speak to them in His wrath and terrify them in His burning anger:
“I have installed My king on Zion, My holy hill.”
I will declare the decree of the LORD: He said to me, “You are My son; this day have I begotten you.
Ask of Me, and I will give you the nations for your inheritance, and the ends of the earth for your possession.
You will break them with a scepter of iron; you will dash them in pieces like a potter’s vessel.”
Now then, you kings, be wise; be admonished, you judges of the earth.
Serve the LORD with fear; tremble with trepidation!

He Who Preaches Another Jesus

But I fear that somehow, as the serpent deceived Eve through his trickery, so your minds might be led astray from the simplicity that is in Christ. For if he who comes preaches another Jesus, whom we have not preached, or if you receive another spirit, which you have not received, or another gospel, which you have not accepted, you might submit to it readily enough.

2 Corinthians 11:3–4

This is a warning against gullibility. Paul is teaching us to be circumspect and not immediately tolerant of other ideas without inspecting them throughly. There are other versions of Jesus being preached. There are other spirits you can receive.

These false teachings use the seemingly right-religious words. These often seem to be pious, and even Christian in nature. Yet the idea being offered in then may not necessarily align with the truth of Jesus Christ.

The strategy is to get the false ideas into the body. Whether that body is the corporate church or the individual believer. This is how the enemy a foothold. It’s an entrance inside the armor, a permission slip that gives him rights to exploit.

Do not give place to the devil. Let him who steals steal no more. Instead, let him labor, working with his hands things which are good, that he may have something to share with him who is in need.
Let no unwholesome word proceed out of your mouth, but only that which is good for building up, that it may give grace to the listeners. And do not grieve the Holy Spirit of God, in whom you are sealed for the day of redemption. Let all bitterness, wrath, anger, outbursts, and blasphemies, with all malice, be taken away from you. And be kind one to another, tenderhearted, forgiving one another, just as God in Christ also forgave you.

Ephesians 4:27–32

When false ideas enter the body of Christ, the strategy employed is to savagely destroy that body from the inside. The seduction of false doctrine hoodwinks many.

How can you be certain you’ve not succumbed to such a subtlety?

Pray to God to give you discernment. And when He shows you what it is, disavow it out loud in Jesus’ name. And then don’t do those things that give the enemy a place.

Paneas and You

Then Jesus said to His disciples, “If anyone will come after Me, let him deny himself, and take up his cross, and follow Me.

Matthew 16:24

In as much as Jesus is talking to His disciples present at Banias, He is also talking to you and me. This is the walk of the Christian. We are to take up our own cross.

Therefore, since we are encompassed with such a great cloud of witnesses, let us also lay aside every weight and the sin that so easily entangles us, and let us run with endurance the race that is set before us. Let us look to Jesus, the author and finisher of our faith, who for the joy that was set before Him endured the cross, despising the shame, and is seated at the right hand of the throne of God. For consider Him who endured such hostility from sinners against Himself, lest you become weary and your hearts give up.

Hebrews 12:1–3

Jesus despised the shame of the cross… Yet endured the suffering. He is now lifted up and seated in glory. The writer of Hebrews uses this as encouragement. The idea of taking up the cross may come with an expectation of suffering. But I choose to think of it as an expectation of victory.

Jesus did not fear what would happen. He set His mind beyond the momentary suffering. Though I don’t think any of us could even begin to imagine the things He endured, it is not about death, but life.

This is Spiritual Warfare

Jesus has already told His disciples that the Gates of Hell will not prevail against His church. The church, which is built upon the resurrection of Jesus as the chief Cornerstone. We, as living stones, are told to take up our part in the building of the church. Not a physical building, but the activity of building up. We do that, just as Jesus did… By denying our desires and seeking to do the will of the Father.

For whoever would save his life will lose it, and whoever loses his life for My sake will find it.

Matthew 16:25

Paul would put it this way.

Let this mind be in you all, which was also in Christ Jesus, who, being in the form of God, did not consider equality with God something to be grasped. But He emptied Himself, taking upon Himself the form of a servant, and was made in the likeness of men. And being found in the form of a man, He humbled Himself and became obedient to death, even death on a cross. Therefore God highly exalted Him and gave Him the name which is above every name, that at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, of those in heaven and on earth and under the earth, and every tongue should confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father.

Philippians 2:5–11

If there is any that had the right to hold onto themselves and their position, it is the Creator of the universe. Yet as our working through Matthew 16 and the account at the Grotto of Pan shows, He took on the form of a servant. He became obedient to the curse of death. It was through that cross that He really had life.

For what will it profit a man if he gains the whole world and loses his own soul? Or what shall a man give in exchange for his soul?

Matthew 16:26

Here is that idea of binding and loosing spoken of before. It is iterated in a different way. One may continue to serve self and gain all of the wealth and power in this life. Yet cannot take the power and prestige into the next life. Such would be remanded to an eternity of languishing in the futility of self-pursuit. That one loses his soul in perdition hot, needy, and alone.

Yet if we loosen our grip on pursuing our own positions in life, just as Jesus did we gain our soul. Life is not living for oneself but for others. Those others include the Savior Who led by example.

It is exactly that mindset where the victory of the Gates of Hell is. There is a real battle for you and your soul. It happens in your mind and among your thoughts.

Paneas is about looking beyond ourselves and beyond our circumstances. It is about taking our thoughts captive. That means identifying those thoughts that come from outside our minds.

Peter provides a poignant glimpse into this. At the beginning he rightfully identifies the Son of Man. Jesus says this thought arose outside of Peter’s mind being revealed by the Father. In the same way, when Peter denied Jesus’ death and resurrection, Jesus attested to the origin of that thought.

Likewise, being born of the Spirit and with His help, we can identify the thoughts in our mind. These thoughts come from our own inner voice or a prompting of the Spirit.

And sometimes they come with a heavy dousing of brimstone. These are the ones that discourage, shame, accuse, and condemn. Throw them out. Don’t bring them inside. Don’t entertain them.

The battle in the mind can hinder. The prescription Jesus gives us to deny ourselves. Deny a focus on our thoughts, even looking to encourage and better the welfare of others.

Taking up your cross is not to focus on suffering. It is to focus on victory. It is about shedding the fear that comes with sin and death and look toward life, everlasting life.

Speaking to that, we do life with other believers, in fellowship. We encourage each other, being accountable. We do this in local bodies called churches. Remember Jesus’ words, the Gates of Hell shall not prevail against His church.

Looking for Jesus

For the Son of Man shall come with His angels in the glory of His Father, and then He will repay every man according to his works.

Matthew 16:27

Our focus is always on Jesus. We look forward to His return when justice is delivered. This is the sure victory all will see clearly.

For some it won’t be a good thing… Especially for those waiting to be judged for their works.

Truly I say to you, there are some standing here who shall not taste death before they see the Son of Man coming in His kingdom.”

Matthew 16:28

Now, this verse has confounded many. Some say this is about the transfiguration which happens on Mt. Hermon recorded in the next chapter of Matthew.

I think this is speaking to something a bit more practical. When Jesus was taken up in the first chapter of Acts, He gave instructions to His disciples to remain in Jerusalem and wait for the promise or power.

So when they had come together, they asked Him, “Lord, will You at this time restore the kingdom to Israel?”
He said to them, “ It is not for you to know the times or the dates, which the Father has fixed by His own authority. But you shall receive power when the Holy Spirit comes upon you. And you shall be My witnesses in Jerusalem, and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the ends of the earth.”

Acts 1:6–8

The disciples ask Jesus if the kingdom would be restored to Israel. Jesus said it’s not for them to know the times, as if there seems to be a pause to the restoring of the kingdom to Israel. He promised them they will receive power and be witnesses to all. That was the calling to Israel, who failed to attain that. It’s not a far stretch to see the Son of Man coming in His kingdom is a reference to the birth of the church. The same church-kingdom to which the Gates of Hell have no way to answer.

John,
To the seven churches which are in Asia:
Grace to you and peace from Him who is and who was and who is to come and from the seven Spirits who are before His throne, and from Jesus Christ, who is the faithful witness, the firstborn from the dead, and the ruler of the kings of the earth. To Him who loved us and washed us from our sins in His own blood, and has made us kings and priests to His God and Father, to Him be glory and dominion forever and ever. Amen.

Revelation 1:4–6

John attests that we have been made kings and priests. It is a theme repeated in Revelation.

And they sang a new song, saying:
“You are worthy to take the scroll,
and to open its seals;
for You were slain,
and have redeemed us to God by Your blood
out of every tribe and tongue and people and nation,
and have made us kings and priests unto our God;
and we shall reign on the earth.”

Revelation 5:9–10

Blessed and holy is he who takes part in the first resurrection. Over these the second death has no power, but they shall be priests of God and of Christ and shall reign with Him a thousand years.

Revelation 20:6

I encourage all to read a few verses before the last verse in chapter 20. There is a previous post explaining who the judges are. Keep in mind that the term first resurrection is probably not indicative of a one-time event. It is a classification, think first class, which doesn’t necessarily mean the first class of the day.

Back to the text… We see clearly that this New Testament body is peculiar in nature. It is a body of judges, kings, and priests who will serve in His Millennial kingdom. John said we’ve already been made kings and priests. It’s my contention that His kingdom did come with the birth of the church at Pentecost.

Peter seems to witness to this truth in his sermon, too.

God raised up this Jesus, of which we all are witnesses. Therefore being exalted to the right hand of God, and having received from the Father the promise of the Holy Spirit, He has poured out this which you now see and hear. For David has not ascended to the heavens, yet he says:
‘The Lord said to my Lord,
“Sit at My right hand,
Until I make Your enemies
Your footstool.” ’
“Therefore, let all the house of Israel assuredly know that God has made this Jesus, whom you have crucified, both Lord and Christ.”

Acts 2:32–36

That’s where we get a hint to what the kingdom. Jesus Christ did indeed ascend to heaven. He sat down, taking His seat as Lord and Christ. He sent His promised Spirit into those who believe. It is those who are of the kingdom of the Son of Man. One that has not yet been restored to Israel yet nevertheless exists in a body of believers now. That is the body of Christ.

The importance of Paneas is not to be taken lightly. The exact workings of the kingdom were revealed there. Jesus would die, and rose again putting His Spirit in believers. In that Hell is defeated now. It has no business with believers, including you.

Don’t give it entry into your mind, your life, or your church. Pray daily revoking rights and permissions given to any spirit other that that of God and Jesus, whether those are down intentionally or accidentally. You and I have that power, in Jesus’ name!

Paneas and Sacrifice

But He turned and said to Peter, “Get behind Me, Satan! You are an offense to Me, for you are not mindful of the things that are of God, but those that are of men.”

Matthew 16:23

This is a startling and sharp rebuke to Peter. It is evidence of His emotionally humanistic conception. Because of that, Peter is aligning himself with Satan’s plan. One that would deter Jesus from fulfilling His mission. The rebuke is harsh and demonstrates to us the focus Jesus had on His mission. He was sent to die.

Peter’s fear is revealed at the thought of Jesus dying. That fear also gives an opportunity for offense. Peter stumbles. This Foundation the church is built upon is not Peter, but it is the Rock of offense. In the last post, the idea of the Rock Jesus spoke of would be Himself. Testified to previously by Peter himself.

Long after the death and resurrection of Jesus, Peter expounds on this theme by cutting the Tanakh.

Coming to Him as to a living stone who is rejected by men, but chosen by God and precious, you also, as living stones, are being built up into a spiritual house as a holy priesthood to offer up spiritual sacrifices that are acceptable to God through Jesus Christ.

1 Peter 2:4–6

Peter now understands the issue clearly. Jesus is the Rock chosen by God Himself and would give the greatest sacrifice. Jesus is the Foundation the church is being built upon. Peter is one of those living stones, as is every believer. Like every believer, we are like Jesus, kings and priests working for God.

To Him who loved us and washed us from our sins in His own blood, and has made us kings and priests to His God and Father, to Him be glory and dominion forever and ever. Amen.

Revelation 1:5b–6

The Acceptance of Obedience

Just as Jesus laying down His life was a spiritual sacrifice; we believers are called to do the same.

I urge you therefore, brothers, by the mercies of God, that you present your bodies as a living sacrifice, holy, and acceptable to God, which is your reasonable service of worship. Do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind, that you may prove what is the good and acceptable and perfect will of God.

Romans 12:1–2

The idea of sacrificing ourselves to the work of Jesus is the same as that of living stones in a spiritual house. Like Murray’s, or denial of ourselves comes with gifts for service to Him and others. Paul explains it this way.

For I say, through the grace given to me, to everyone among you, not to think of himself more highly than he ought to think, but to think with sound judgment, according to the measure of faith God has distributed to every man. For just as we have many parts in one body, and not all parts have the same function, so we, being many, are one body in Christ, and all are parts of one another. We have diverse gifts according to the grace that is given to us: if prophecy, according to the proportion of faith; if service, in serving; he who teaches, in teaching; he who exhorts, in exhortation; he who gives, with generosity; he who rules, with diligence; he who shows mercy, with cheerfulness.

Romans 12:3–8

Just as each stone is selected and purposefully cut to fit into the overall structure, the same is with the spiritual house (or body of Christ.) A stone crafted to be a lintel does not fit as a doorpost or wall stone. Each has a carefully crafted purpose. This is the idea, that we yield ourselves to be conformed to the purposes God has chosen for us. In this, we prove His perfection.

The Rejection of the Disobedience

For also it is contained in the Scripture, “Look! I lay in Zion a chief cornerstone, elect, precious, and he who believes in Him shall never be put to shame.”
Therefore, to you who believe, He is precious. But to those who are disobedient, “The stone that the builders rejected has become the cornerstone,” and, “A stone of stumbling, and a rock of offense.” They stumble because they are disobedient to the word, to which also they were appointed.

1 Peter 2:7–8

As believers, we will never be put to shame no matter what we may do. That is a simple truth.

The same is not valid for those who disobey and never believe. These are offended at the thought that the Anointed King would have to die. Let alone Him dying for their sins. Obedient belief is appointed to Israelis. Yet they reject it stumbling in their own disobedience.

Jesus calls all of us to a living sacrifice, just as He did. We know He died and rose again. And we can expect the same for us because of His promises.

Sacrifice at the Gates of Hell

The sacrifices offered at the Gates of Hell stood in stark contrast. The pagan gods worshipped there completely consumed the dead sacrifices offered to them.

The Grotto of Pan is a cave. It was the reason the nearby sanctuary was built. A natural spring gushed water into what is now called the Banias River. This river feeds the Jordan River. In ancient times, water entered the cave and disappeared into a deep fissure in the rock. It is estimated to have been over 800 feet deep. Subsequent seismic activity destroyed much of the features of the cave.

When a sacrifice was made, the dead carcass was thrown into the mouth of the cave. The waters carried it into the natural abyss at the back of the cave. The victim disappeared into the water. If no blood appeared in the nearby springs, the offering was thought to be accepted.

Panic and the Cure

It is fitting in this setting to speak of these things as a rich backdrop to what Jesus is saying and doing. This is the Gates of Hell, the Grotto of Pan. Pan is considered by some to be one of the first deities. He is a fertility god and is the embodiment of nature. He is also known for enticing fear with panic. The word panic is derived from his name.

Way back in the garden, the idea of death was whitewashed by the shining one (serpent.) Even was persuaded to partake of the forbidden, and in turn, gave to her husband. Something changed. They knew they were naked and covered themselves. When God called, they hid in fear. Death came to humanity, and with it came fear. Death became the bondage of Adam’s race.

Yet Adam was not supposed to know death. This bondage to death is the very thing the enemy has used to shackle people. When people are confronted with sudden death, fear and then panic take hold. The shining one brought war to God through humans. The mythologies of old subtly obscure the truth.

Jesus in rebuking Peter, hoped to shock him from panic. It was Jesus on His mission to end the war of the gods and free humanity. Jesus was going to do it by dying. His resurrection destroyed the power of death. Fear and panic are decimated. We know that by hindsight. Think of how many times the Bible tells us to not be afraid, even in the presence of God.

So then, as the children share in flesh and blood, He likewise took part in these, so that through death He might destroy him who has the power of death, that is, the devil, and deliver those who through fear of death were throughout their lives subject to bondage.

Hebrews 2:14–15

It is my opinion that the eventual devastation of this grotto is proof that God destroyed the power of death. The sacred places of the old gods are in ruins now.

That fear of death that binds no longer has power. Jesus died to give us precious respite from the justice due to us for our sins. He rose again to give us victory over sin. It is in that freedom we have an opportunity to be reconciled to God Himself.

Rest assured, though… If one dies in their sins, the destiny is everlasting perdition.

Paneas and Peter’s Rebuke of Jesus

Then Peter took Him and began rebuking Him, saying, “Far be it from You, Lord! This shall not happen to You.”

Matthew 16:22

Peter attempts to teach the Teacher. He criticizes Jesus assuming he knows better. Peter is primed with (to him) contemporary thinking that the Messiah came to vanquish enemies. Jesus couldn’t do that if He died, right?

The Conquering Messiah

In the political climate of the time, there was a short list of agreement among Jewish sects. This included important differences on the expectation of the Messiah. The Essenes were expecting a military hero that would reform temple worship. The Sadducees had no messianic expectations, denied resurrection, and therefore had limited expectations of a future Davidic Kingdom. The Idumaeans (Herodians) would also not be interested in a competing leader. The Pharisees however, expected a Messiah.

One particular agreement amongst the sects was a longing for freedom from Roman rule. This idea had roots in the earlier Maccabean revolt and eventually culminated in AD70. There are important Jewish writings that many are unfamiliar with, and this would include an apocryphal work called the Psalms of Solomon. This book has ties to the Maccabean revolt and is considered non-canonical, yet it was part of the Septuagint. Some of these psalms demonstrate an awareness of the Roman conquest of Jerusalem. Others are clearly Messianic. One in particular Psalms of Solomon 17 is similar to Psalm 72 (also attributed to Solomon.)

It was this Psalms of Solomon 17 that seems to have formed much of the political expectations that the Pharisees had of the Messiah. This idea would also be known among the citizenry of Israel. This particular Psalm is messianic. I will cite a part of it from the Septuagint that demonstrates the expectation.

See, O Lord, and raise up their king for them, a son of David, for the proper time that you see, God, to rule over Israel your servant. And undergird him with strength to shatter unrighteous rulers. Cleanse Jerusalem from the nations that trample it in destruction, to expel sinners from the inheritance in wisdom, in righteousness, to rub out the arrogance of the sinner like a potter’s vessel, to crush all their support with an iron rod; to destroy lawless nations by the word of his mouth, for Gentiles to flee from his face at his threat, and to reprove sinners by the word of their heart.

The Servant

It is a line in that Psalm above that takes us to the next point, the identity of the servant. Second Temple era Judaism interpreted much of the texts speaking of the suffering servant as an identification of the nation Israel. Just as it is above.

But what does the Bible show us?

Here is My servant, whom I uphold, My chosen one, in whom My soul delights. I have put My Spirit upon him;
he shall bring forth justice to the nations.

Isaiah 42:1

You are My witnesses, says the Lord, and My servant whom I have chosen that you may know and believe Me, and understand that I am He. Before Me there was no God formed, nor shall there be after Me.

Isaiah 43:10

He said to me, “You are My servant, Israel, in whom I will be glorified.”

Isaiah 49:3

See, My servant shall deal prudently; he shall be exalted and extolled, and be very high.

Isaiah 52:13

Hear this, O Joshua the high priest, you and your friends sitting before you, for these men are a sign. I am bringing My servant, the Branch. The stone that I have set before Joshua, on that single stone is seven eyes. And I will engrave an inscription, says the Lord of Hosts, and I will remove the iniquity of this land in one day.

Zechariah 3:8–9

I offer a few of the texts to demonstrate that this servant idea applies to both Israel as a nation and to the Messiah. It might be clear to us modern thinkers, but not so much for any Israeli at that time.

Being that an Israeli would consider the servant to be the nation of Israel, writings such as Psalm 22 would be taken as a cry from the nation as a servant. Isaiah 53 would also be understood as not messianic in nature.

Who has believed our report?
And to whom has the arm of the Lord been revealed?
For he grew up before Him as a tender plant and as a root out of a dry ground. He has no form or majesty that we should look upon him nor appearance that we should desire him. He was despised and rejected of men,
a man of sorrows and acquainted with grief.
And we hid, as it were, our faces from him;
he was despised, and we did not esteem him.
Surely he has borne our grief and carried our sorrows; Yet we esteemed him stricken, smitten of God, and afflicted. But he was wounded for our transgressions,
he was bruised for our iniquities;
the chastisement of our peace was upon him, and by his stripes we are healed.
All of us like sheep have gone astray; each of us has turned to his own way, but the Lord has laid on him the iniquity of us all. He was oppressed, and he was afflicted,
yet he opened not his mouth;
he was brought as a lamb to the slaughter,
and as a sheep before its shearers is silent,
so he opened not his mouth.
By oppression and judgment he was taken away, and who shall declare his generation? For he was cut off out of the land of the living; for the transgression of my people he was struck. His grave was assigned with the wicked, yet with the rich in his death,
because he had done no violence,
nor was any deceit in his mouth.
Yet it pleased the Lord to bruise him; He has put him to grief. If he made himself as an offering for sin, he shall see his offspring, he shall prolong his days, and the good pleasure of the Lord shall prosper in his hand. He shall see of the anguish of his soul and be satisfied.
By his knowledge My righteous servant shall justify the many, for he shall bear their iniquities.
Therefore, I will divide him a portion with the great, and he shall divide the spoil with the strong, because he poured out his soul to death, and he was numbered with the transgressors, thus he bore the sin of many
and made intercession for the transgressors.

Isaiah 53:1–12

This portion of Isaiah is not known by many Jewish folk today. It is called the forbidden chapter. It is excluded from haftara portions that are read openly in synagogues.

In hindsight, this particular chapter outlines the mission of the Messiah as told beforehand in excruciating detail. He would necessarily suffer and die for sins.

Perhaps it was overlooked that if Messiah made Himself an offering for sins, it also says “(H)e shall see his offspring, he shall prolong his days, and the good pleasure of the Lord shall prosper in his hand.” Th were is no other way to describe that but as resurrection. No other explanation can be made as to how someone can prolong Their days after One dies.

With all that in mind, it seems apropos that Jesus would begin to speak about resurrection.

The Rock

Zechariah told us the servant is the Rock. The Bible talks about Jesus being the precious cornerstone that to some, specifically Israelis, would be a rock of offense. One to stumble over, just as Peter did.

Why not? Because they did not seek it by faith, but by the works of the law. For they stumbled over the stumbling stone. As it is written:
“Look! I lay in Zion a stumbling stone
and rock of offense, and whoever believes in Him will not be ashamed.”

Romans 9:32–33

Peter is expecting the Conquering King. He is expecting a Righteous Ruler. A suffering Servant was not expected. The talk of resurrection would also be unexpected and go right over his head.

As Jesus had stated before this rebuke of Peter, He would suffer many things from the elders, chief priests, and scribes. All of which would lead to His death. Yet He boldly said He would prolong His days and be raised on the third day.

Peter’s response to it is disbelief. To his credit, I might be able to understand that thinking. It raises a question in my mind.

Why would a Conquering King need to die before taking His rightful place on the throne?

There are other messianic texts that fill in details. The prophecies were clear.

“Know therefore and understand that from the going forth of the command to restore and to rebuild Jerusalem until the Prince Messiah shall be seven weeks, and sixty-two weeks. It shall be built again, with plaza and moat, even in times of trouble. After the sixty-two weeks Messiah shall be cut off and shall have nothing. And the troops of the prince who shall come shall destroy the city and the sanctuary.

Daniel 9:25–26

Messiah will be cut off and have nothing. The euphemism cut off is a reference to sudden death. Peter has no excuse not to know this as the penalty for sin that is ascribed in the law. Yet plainly, the mission of the Messiah is clearly outlined in the Tanakh. Peter is taking an emotionally humanistic view, not quite understanding the precise timing.

Seventy weeks have been determined for your people and upon your holy city, to finish the transgression, and to make an end of sins, and to make atonement for iniquity, and to bring in everlasting righteousness, and to seal up the vision and prophecy, and to anoint the Most Holy Place.

Daniel 9:24

That text comes before the prophecy of the Messiah being cut off. It lays out the planned timing. 70 weeks are given (that’s a figure of speech meaning 490 years.) Messiah is cut off after 69 weeks.

It follows that if Messiah is to put an end to all of that, one week is left after being cut off. He would need to prolong His days to accomplish the task. He would have to be alive after dying.

To this day, controversy is afoot concerning these passages in Daniel. Some say the prophecies are done. Others say seven more years remain for Israel. One must also consider why a nation was destroyed and its people scattered, survived as a people for millennia. They are now being gathered into a nation called Israel born in a day. A student of prophecy knows that the nation as a whole has not been regathered in history. We are witnesses to God keeping His Word.

End Thoughts

Daniel 9:24 speaks to a finish of transgression, end of sins, atonement and to bring in everlasting righteousness. Our experience demonstrates these things are yet (very near) future. As the scattered Israelis are continually being called home.

To the first century Jewish mind, it would be murky at best. Especially when the nation is under brutal Roman occupation. Read that as being lorded over by Gentile mutts. Peter wanted a King. He did not want what seemed a suicide mission.

ImOur attention must be brought into focus. Jesus spoke of His death and His resurrection. Both are an integral part of His mission. And each accomplish different tasks. One a Satisfaction off the justice due for sins. The other as complete removal of sins.

This two-fold mission of the Rock is also the very thing that presents itself as a stumbling block. It is that sense, this same Rock is the Cornerstone Jesus is going to build His church on. Some are going to stumble over that. The mensch Peter didn’t get the death part because he didn’t expect the victory in resurrection.

Tartarus is the Netherworld

This is the black cube. It conveys an idea you probably have not considered. It represents one of the oldest secret religions. It is a symbol of the worship of Saturn. Saturn is just another name for the deity El. He is the bull-god of the ancients.

The black cube does represent Saturn himself. As such, the black cube represents the dark netherworld where Saturn is now incarcerated.

The Bible says entities like these are chained up in a pit. The ancients called that pit Tartarus. The Bible uses that word Tartarus one time… As the place for fallen angels.

For if God did not spare the angels that sinned, but cast them down to hell and delivered them into chains of darkness to be kept for judgment; and if He did not spare the ancient world, but saved Noah, a preacher of righteousness, with seven others, when He brought a flood upon the world of the ungodly; and if He condemned the cities of Sodom and Gomorrah to destruction by reducing them to ashes, making them an example to those afterward who would live ungodly lives;

2 Peter 2:4–6

In case you thought I was making it up, those gods of old are real and are currently sequestered away… It’s right there. This part of the Scriptures helps us to understand the importance of Paneas and what Jesus was saying.

Cube Imagery

The cube is represented in two dimensions by a hexagon with three lines connecting the opposite points. All of these are various two-dimensional representations of a three-dimensional cube.

Surprisingly, the hexagon also appears on the planet Saturn itself. Modern space exploration has given us images of this anomaly. (For those who do not believe in space flight… It wouldn’t be a coincidence, either.)

Symbology

As employed, the cube is an overt sign of wherever this god of old has influence. How can that god have influence if he’s locked up?

History teaches is that crime bosses continued their operations even while incarcerated.

The hexagon can be divided and unfolded out into a six-point star called a hexagram (which still has a hexagon in the center.)

In like manner, the cube can be unfolded to become a cross.

This is where it can be confusing, because things become blurry. Adherents can embrace a cross and the Star of David albeit it with esoteric meanings and usefulness.

Saturn and his cube are associated with evil and darkness. Those who worship in secret do so to obtain necessary illumination.

This post is a slight deviation but fits well in the current series. It provides necessary information that can help us to be wise in discerning the times. On the surface, things can appear orthodox. But a closer examination is always required.

Examine all things. Firmly hold onto what is good. Abstain from all appearances of evil.

When Jesus came into the region of Caesarea Philippi, He asked His disciples, “Who do men say that I, the Son of Man, am?”

Jesus came to Caesarea Philippi with His disciples. This passage of text is important for many, yet it is not without controversy. Like much of what we find in the Bible, there is far more that is unwritten than we might take care to discover.

Mount Hermon

Caesarea Phillippi was home to the Temple of Pan. It is called the Temple of Banias today, Arabic for the Temple of Panias. (In Arabic there is no letter P.) This temple is part of Mount Hermon, legendary as the place where angels came down seeking different flesh.

I know that might be unsettling to some, but there are additional resources to help understand. Genesis 6 is the first mention and like the text above… There is much context that the writer assumes is understood by the intended audience. Much of that context has been explained away over centuries of time. Suffice it to say, angels came down and took wives.

When men began to multiply on the face of the earth and daughters were born to them, the sons of God saw that the daughters of men were fair and took as wives any they chose. The LORD said, “My Spirit will not always strive with man, for he is flesh; yet his days will be a hundred and twenty years.” The Nephilim were on the earth in those days, and also after that, when the sons of God came in to the daughters of men, and they bore children to them. These were the mighty men who were of old, men of renown.

Likewise, the angels who did not keep to their first domain, but forsook their own dwelling, He has kept in everlasting chains under darkness for the judgment of the great day. Just as Sodom and Gomorrah, and the surrounding cities in like manner, gave themselves to immorality and went after different flesh, they serve as an example by suffering the punishment of eternal fire.

It is for this reason, that Mount Hermon is the mountain of the gods (As a title, it ought to be capitalized, but I want to emphasize these are the little ‘g’ type gods.) It is the sides of the north (Isaiah 14:13.) It is the base of operation for the enemy. One that goes by many names and has many minions.

The Warning Shot

They said, “Some say that You are John the Baptist, others say Elijah, and others Jeremiah or one of the prophets.”

His disciples answered Him. Jesus wasn’t surprised at their answer. He then addressed them personally.

He said to them, “But who do you say that I am?”

That is the question. Metaphorically, it is a question we must all answer as eternity for each of us hangs on it. Who do you say that I am?

Peter steps up.

Simon Peter replied, “You are the Christ, the Son of the living God.”

There it is. That is the warning shot lobbed into enemy territory from inside enemy territory.

Peter states Jesus’ identity out loud.

Jesus answered him, “Blessed are you, Simon son of Jonah, for flesh and blood has not revealed this to you, but My Father who is in heaven. And I tell you that you are Peter, and on this rock I will build My church, and the gates of Hades shall not prevail against it. I will give you the keys of the kingdom of heaven, and whatever you bind on earth shall be bound in heaven, and whatever you loose on earth shall be loosed in heaven.”

This isn’t about Peter being given a mission. It’s not about Peter starting a church. This isn’t a Catholic thing. Peter wasn’t the only one given the keys to the kingdom. Neither was it the Roman Catholic church. It was to the body of Spirit-baptized believers.

This is Jesus saying in the midst of enemy territory… “I am here. Come and get a piece of Me!” Jesus is picking a fight, and proclaiming that He wins!

Jesus will build His church on the truth that He is indeed the Son of God. He is the Anointed One. He is the Seed of the woman prophesied in Genesis 3:15. This seemingly frail Human is vulnerable, yet the gates of Hell will not prevail in this fight.

The Offensive

The body of Christ is not on the defensive side here. The gates of Hell will not prevail. Gates are primarily a defensive fortification.

Then He commanded His disciples to tell no one that He was Jesus the Christ.

Instructions were given to not share this information. But it is from this moment that Jesus began to teach His disciples that He must suffer, be killed, and then raised up again.

The enemy took the best shot they had. Jesus did go to Jerusalem. Jesus suffered much, He died. He rose again. He told them they emphatically would not prevail, and they tried their best. And failed.

Do not ever forget, that in Jesus we all have the high ground. We Spirit-baptized believers are already victorious. The enemy and his minions have no rightful claim on any of His. They are terrified at the name of Jesus.

I will leave you with these words from Paul.

As you have received Christ Jesus the Lord, so walk in Him, rooted and built up in Him and established in the faith, as you have been taught, and abounding with thanksgiving.
Beware lest anyone captivate you through philosophy and vain deceit, in the tradition of men and the elementary principles of the world, and not after Christ. For in Him lives all the fullness of the Godhead bodily. And you are complete in Him, who is the head of all authority and power. In Him you were also circumcised with the circumcision made without hands, by putting off the body of the sins of the flesh, by the circumcision of Christ, buried with Him in baptism, in which also you were raised with Him through the faith of the power of God, who has raised Him from the dead.
And you, being dead in your sins and the uncircumcision of your flesh, He has resurrected together with Him, having forgiven you all sins. He blotted out the handwriting of ordinances that was against us and contrary to us, and He took it out of the way, nailing it to the cross.
